Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist and devout Muslim, fatally shot 13 American citizens (12 service members) and wounded an additional 29 people at the largest U.S. military base, Fort Hood, Texas. For six months, authorities had been tracking the extremist thinking of Hasan. Internet postings like this one go back to May 20, 2009: "Scholars have paralleled (a U.S. soldier's falling on a grenade to save surrounding troops) to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers." Hasan vehemently opposed the U.S. missions in the Middle East, arguing with co-workers, senior officers and even patients. He quarreled with Col. Like many of you I suppose, I have been watching the news accounts of the protests in Iran with fascination. Here are a people who despite the risk to life and limb are coming out by the thousands to protest the kind of regime that has kept them down since the late 70's. First thing is that the election is not the real issue. The so called 'opposition' leader is only slightly different in his policies than the entrenched supreme leader and the so-called re-elected president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. What is really going on is that Iranians are at the point of no return. There have been reports for the last several years that there has been a huge western influence in Iran. Many Iranians have come to the united states to pursue their educational goals. While it is true that many stay and become successful here in the U.S., the majority end up back in Iran. Thank God and the Navy SEALs that they all got out alive. But will Americans be as lucky next time?During 2008 alone, these thugs raided more than 130 vessels, resulting in 50 successful hijackings and millions of dollars paid in ransoms. With at least five well-organized pirate gangs off the Horn of Africa -- including the al-Shabab militia, which is a group of Islamic extremists that some people compare to the Taliban -- all seeking and splitting the spoils of these sea traders, isn't it time America better protects our merchant mariners in volatile areas, such as off the Somali coast? Isn't it time they are armed with better deterrents than fire hoses, rubber bullets and sonic weapons? Isn't it time our Navy SEALs reach land and cut pirates off at the pass? Ransoms only enable these hooligans. And negotiations never work...

Today, November 11 th , 2008 is the day we as a Nation celebrate Veterans Day. A day set aside to pay homage to the lives that have been lost in the name of this great country. A day also to celebrate all veterans of the United States Armed forces who HAVE and who ARE sacrificing and risking their very lives for the sake of freedom.
