Are there any Sons of Liberty left?
Samuel Adams was among the first to consider himself a Son of Liberty. These were early Americans who were gathering and expressing themselves in town meetings and in Taverns, protesting the treatment they were receiving at the hands of the Crown. The Americans were experiencing ill treatment from their Governors and other appointed leaders. Not everyone was a patriot. There were many Tories, or those loyal to England and the Crown.
And then, like now, there were many who sat on the fence. These were people who did not like the way things were but did not want to 'rock the boat'. Enter patriots who started organizing across New England and into the surrounding colonies. They became the voice of the silent majority who would be silent no longer.
Samuel Adams was the first, but many early patriot leaders followed his lead. Joseph Warren became an outspoken leader as well as Patrick Henry, John Hancock and Paul Revere. These men as well as many others were the leaders who organized 'the Mohawks' to dump the tea sitting on ships into the Boston Harbor. Hundreds participated and thousands watched it happen with an approving eye.
These Sons of Liberty groups spread and set up committees of safety in each town, and organized local militias. As tensions rose and violence seemed imminent, arms were stored and powder was hid. One of the first things the provincial Governors and men such as General Gage did was to confiscate all the firearms, powder and cannon they could find. Because a disarmed populace is easier to subjugate.
The battles of Lexington and Concord were because the British wanted to arrest all those who spoke against the king and were seen as the American Patriot's leaders. Free speech was not allowed and those who printed the words of these patriot leaders were marked men. There was no outlet for opposition or room for differing ideas. The idea of freedom or liberty was to be put down and snuffed out. Who were these Americans who thought they could go against the king?
It would not have been hard to placate the colonies. And there were voices in London who supported letting America govern herself and take part in its own. The vast majority of patriots had been loyal Englishmen but saw themselves being unjustly governed. The American revolution was just the next step in proclaiming the natural rights that these men saw as inherent in all men.
But I digress, my question is ,"Where are the Sons of Liberty today?" I believe that they are out there. I would like to consider myself a Son of Liberty and proclaim as much. I will not be silenced. I am willing to make people uncomfortable by speaking the truth and I will not apologize for not agreeing with my President.
Government does not give me my freedom. My freedom is given to me by my creator. Our Government was instituted as a protection of our freedoms and yet today it has become a leviathan. A giant that is no-where near what the founders fought and bled to provide to this country. The original Sons of Liberty fought against much less than what we as Americans are dealing with now. Why is that? Americans have become complacent. We are far too wiling to give up a little freedom for a little security or rather than risk being a target. The problem is that each time we gave up a little freedom we were asked to give up just a little more. Soon we will have given up so much that we will not be able to fight against those who have been taking our freedoms. And now there are forces at work trying to further take away the rights of Americans. And all done in the name of the common good.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party rose to power based on what was best for the common good. And where did that end. We are heading down a slippery slope toward a socialistic government all in the name of the common good. We need the Sons of Liberty today to stand up and call the American People to the Virtual Tree of Liberty and educate them about our blessed constitution, which does not give us our rights but proclaims them and sets up the checks on government to protect those rights.
It is time to stand together! No socialist form of government has ever worked and it will not work now. We need to make our elected leaders responsible to us..........................or replace them. Do not give one inch or they will take a foot. Do not compromise, because they won't.
In the words of Patrick Henry on the floor of the Continental Congress:
"They tell us sir, that we are weak-unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be next week, or next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house?" But they were not weak, he went on, "Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible to any force which our enemy can send against us......Gentlemen may cry peace, peace- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why should we idle here?
what is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have?.............Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?"
He stared at the men in the hall, and in a quiet voice said, "I know not what course others may take." and then between clenched teeth, "But as for me, give me liberty- " he let the words hang for a moment and then pounded his fist against his chest and exclaimed "-or give me death."
Silence was all that followed but the words echoed within all who were present!
Read this again and tell me if we are not at this same junction, faced with the same choice.
