Indentured Servitude or Slavery?

The United States of America has totally and unequivocally broken any semblance of the glass ceiling for blacks. A self proclaimed black man has been elected to the highest office in the land. In a country with the scars of slavery, regardless of his socialist views and ideas, this is an historic achievement.

So why would President-elect Obama suggest a form of slavery to be instituted in America? Within 24 hours of becoming the declared winner of the Presidency, Obama had on his website Change.gov an outline for one of his proposals for America.

Obama thinks that the community service he did helped him become the great man he is. That may be true. Obama thinks that if youth performed service for others they would become better individuals and be able to see beyond themselves. This too is most likely true. Obama feels many youth today do not do any kind of community service for their communities. I also feel this is true. But this is where Obama takes a hard left.

  • He want to make community service a requirement for all students in order to advance
  • 50 hrs a year compulsory service for grade school students
  • 100 hrs a year compulsory service for high school students
  • 3 months community service a year for each college student

So I wonder how we compel someone to go along with this? We keep them from advancing, receiving diploma's and degree's of course. So check out the definition of slavery:

Slavery is the systematic exploitation of labour. As a social-economic system, slavery is a legal or informal institution under which a person (called "a slave") is compelled to work for another (sometimes called "the master" or "slave owner").[1] Evidence of slavery predates written records, and has existed to varying extents, forms and periods in almost all cultures and continents.[2] Slaves are held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase, or birth, and are deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to receive compensation (such as wages) in return for their labour. As such, slavery is one form of unfree labor.

An indentured servant is a form of debt bondage worker. The laborer is under contract of an employer for some period of time, usually three to seven years, in exchange for their transportation, food, drink, clothing, lodging and other necessities. Unlike a slave, an indentured servant is required to work only for a limited term specified in a signed contract

Somewhere in the middle of these definitions is Obama's plan. He is requiring work against ones will without any compensation. And if he was so proud of this plan, why did the web site take it down after they started getting flack for it? And how long will the mainstream media protect Obama once he really starts keeping things from them?

I guess we'll wait and see.

You know this makes me nuts. Having 3 teenagers we know that teens are already driven to the point of exhaustion with just academics alone. And we fall way behind the rest of the world in to boot (somethin' isn't going right!) So what will he do, require they not be able to participate in music or athletic programs because their community service hours would have to be first priority? Would it be done during school hours so that academically our nations children can fall further behind? Can teenagers not hold jobs to support their own purchasing needs (like gas which will likely be upwards of $5/gallon in Obama's administration)? What about us middle-classers that can barely put gas in our own vehicles?

Will families EVER have any down time just to bond and be together?! I'd like to give Obama a piece of my mind!! Of course HE won't be affected by this...just all us "little people" struggling to get by and with our families intact!

meant to say we fall way behind the rest of the world in ACADEMICS to boot. got too hot under the collar and didn't proofread. ;)

If you talk with Obama tell him to give me a call. I'd like to have a throwdown about this issue alone. It's MADNESS.

I also noticed that Obama removed all of his agenda items from his change.gov website. However, I was able to download a PDF file of his plan from his campaign website. I have been going through his economic plan on my blog, http://defendtheconstitution.wordpress.com

He mentions this "community service" in connection with his American Opportunity Tax Credit. He would require 100 hours of slavery (oops...I mean "service") per year for each person who claimed this education credit. It is not made clear who would be held responsible for "working it off" if a student were listed as a dependent on their parents' taxes. Nor does it specify a mechanism of enforcement to insure the hours are "donated." Maybe mentioning a taskmaster's whip wouldn't be politically correct.

I would be curious to know how Obama would plan to enforce community service laws for private schools or homeschools.

Currently, though homeschool regulations vary by state, many states do not even require you to register or even inform the public school system of what you're doing at all.
